Inside Zanzibar - your own pace

Some journeys are better when there is time to arrive properly. At Mangrove Lodge, the family and team welcome you into a small place shaped by the coast, the garden and the community around it.

Rest for a few quiet days, explore Stone Town and the greener, more cultural side of the island with trusted guidance, or do a little of both. Mangrove Lodge works especially well as the first or final stop in a wider Zanzibar journey.

A stay shaped by people

Haji grew up in Chuini, while Marina came from Italy and made Zanzibar her home. Their story still shapes the lodge, while their family and a team from Chuini and surrounding villages now carry that local memory, cross-cultural understanding and care into each stay.

A room with the garden around you

Ten comfortable rooms sit within five thatched bungalows among tropical planting. Each has a private entrance and veranda, with the pool, dining areas, garden and coast close by.

Space to settle

The garden’s generous scale gives guests privacy, natural shade beneath mature mango trees and space to find a quiet corner. The sea-view pool, terrace and changing coast leave room for slow mornings and unhurried returns after a day out.

Zanzibar at the table

Meals bring together seasonal produce, fresh seafood, Swahili and Indian influences, and a touch of Marina’s Italian background. Lunch is mainly served by the beach, dinner is often set there too, and the open-air restaurant remains another relaxed place to eat.

Discoveries just steps away

Stone Town, spice farms, Masingini Forest, Prison Island, Bawe and nearby sandbanks are within reach. The lodge team can help choose locally led experiences with context and respect for the people, wildlife and places involved, then leave enough room for the unexpected.

A doorway into Zanzibar’s story

Beside the lodge, the remains of Sultan Barghash’s Palace hold layers of local and island history. The site is being brought into retreat programmes, selected private events, arranged lunches and dinners, day visits and special experiences for lodge guests.

Final invitation

Tell us when you hope to come and who you are travelling with. We will help you plan a stay with the right balance of rest, discovery and time by the sea.

FRESH. LOCAL. DELICIOUS.

Our Restaurant is amazing, the chef is slightly mad and best tables are made from coconuts. And I am hungry now.
